Three Blind Mice No More (3/4/2014)

Last week, a team of researchers at UC Berkeley announced that they had devised a method of restoring sight in blind mice. Led by molecular biologist Richard H. Kramer, the scientists injected a synthetic chemical directly into the eyes of the blind mice. Doing so restored the eyes’ sensitivity to white light, particularly that part of the spectrum encompassing daylight. The scientists caution that the treatment, though promising, would not be a panacea for all visual impairments, and that experiments have so far only proved effective in retinas with degenerated photoreceptors.
